About the Painting

Santa Elena Canyon is one of the defining landscapes of Big Bend National Park, where the Rio Grande has carved a dramatic passage between towering limestone cliffs that rise hundreds of feet above the river. Standing at the mouth of the canyon, I was struck by the contrast between the warm sunlight on the western wall and the cool, reflected light filling the canyon beyond. That interplay of light and shadow became the foundation of the painting.

Rather than focusing on every detail of the rock formations, I sought to simplify the scene into broad value masses and expressive brushwork that would convey both the monumentality of the canyon and the atmosphere of the afternoon light. A lone rider on horseback adds a quiet narrative while providing a sense of scale, reminding us just how immense these cliffs truly are and echoing the long history of travel through this rugged landscape.

Painted in oil on panel, At the Mouth of Santa Elena reflects my continuing pursuit of simplifying form while capturing the character of a place through light, color, and atmosphere. The painting was honored with Third Place, Division I in the Lone Star Art Guild Regional Exhibition, recognizing both the beauty of this iconic Texas landscape and the expressive approach used to interpret it.
